Subscription naming convention

The CAF abbreviation for Subscription is sub. Names can be 1 to 64 characters long and allow alphanumerics, hyphens and underscores. The name must be unique within the tenant.

Naming rules

CAF abbreviation sub
Length 1 to 64 characters
Allowed characters Alphanumerics (a-z, A-Z, 0-9), hyphens, underscores
Scope of uniqueness Unique within the tenant
CAF pattern sub-{workload}-{environment}-{region}-{instance}
Worth knowing: Not a formal ARM resource, Microsoft defines no naming rules. Display names allow up to 64 characters. "sub" is a common community convention, not an official CAF abbreviation.

Rules follow Microsoft's resource naming rules and CAF abbreviations. Some resource types have extra start/end character restrictions, so verify against the official docs before locking in a convention.
