About AzureNamer

A free tool for the Azure community.

What is AzureNamer?

AzureNamer is a free, open-source tool that generates consistent, compliant Azure resource names following Microsoft's Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF) naming conventions.

Instead of manually constructing names and cross-referencing CAF documentation, you fill in your workload, environment, region, and instance — AzureNamer assembles the correct name instantly, for all 203 Azure resource types.

Why we built it

Naming conventions are one of those things every Azure team needs but few get right consistently. The CAF guidelines are thorough but scattered across documentation pages. We wanted a single, fast tool that removes the guesswork — no login, no subscription, no friction.

What's CAF?

The Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework is a set of best practices, guidelines, and tools from Microsoft to help organisations adopt Azure. The naming conventions section defines standard abbreviations and patterns for every Azure resource type, making infrastructure easier to manage, audit, and understand at a glance.

Free and open source

AzureNamer is free to use with no limits. The source code is available on GitHub. Contributions, bug reports, and suggestions are welcome.

Data sources

All naming patterns and resource type abbreviations are sourced directly from the official Microsoft CAF abbreviations reference. We keep them updated as Microsoft adds new resource types.
